Wang Hongjun: The Silk Road Treasure Ship, Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind
I. The Silk Road Treasure Ship: Fusion of Art and Mission
1. Creative Background and Contemporary Significance
◦ Responding to National Strategy: The Silk Road Treasure Ship is a masterpiece by Professor Wang Hongjun, created to align with the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. It serves as an artistic medium to promote "forging a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation" and "building a community with a shared future for mankind," while fostering world peace and enhancing economic and trade cooperation among Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries. After a decade of preparation, the work integrates elements of traditional Chinese culture and Western influences, emerging as a cultural symbol of the BRI.
◦ International Tour Plan: Facilitated by the China Silk Road Treasure Ship International Culture and Art Research Institute, the artwork will embark on a global tour to promote cultural exchange between China and other nations, support artistic collaboration for people with disabilities, and contribute to cultural infrastructure development and economic cooperation in BRI countries.
2. The Artist’s Social Responsibility
Wang Hongjun emphasized: "Art must engage with society to demonstrate its power. The Silk Road Treasure Ship transcends technique and personal expression, achieving unity between the collective and the individual. It is not merely an artistic creation but also a practice of China’s cultural outreach strategy. This requires participation and support from all sectors of society, as well as artists who carry this mission with sincerity and grand vision."
II. Artistic Interpretation of the Silk Road Treasure Ship Oil Painting Series
1. Creative Concept and Visual Language
The Silk Road Treasure Ship oil painting series incorporates iconic architecture, landscapes, and animals from various countries, blended with Chinese poetry, couplets, and calligraphy. Through oil painting, it expresses the core theme of building a community with a shared future. The works fuse Eastern and Western cultures, using the traditional Chinese practice of delivering "blessings" (Fu) to symbolize the arrival of goodwill and prosperity. As Professor Wang Hongjun stated, "The series embodies the 'blessings' brought by the Belt and Road Initiative and international trade, conveying China’s commitment to win-win cooperation."
2. Transition from Critical Conceptualism
Though Wang is the founder of "Critical Conceptualism," he noted: "The Silk Road Treasure Ship series focuses on collaboration and shared benefits, devoid of critique. It offers a positive interpretation of the 'community with a shared future' ideal, radiating hope and mutual goodwill."
III. The Symbolic Meaning of the Silk Road Fortune Ship
1. An Artistic Manifesto for Building a Community of Shared Human Destiny
The metaphor of the Belt and Road Initiative: The Silk Road Fortune Ship symbolizes interconnectedness, the establishment of a community of shared destiny, and the shared prosperity brought about by economic and trade cooperation.
The Vision of Peace and Development: Professor Wang Hongjun pointed out, “Art can transcend language barriers and convey the concept of ‘mutual benefit and win-win’ directly to people’s hearts. This is a soft power that upholds world peace, promotes political mutual trust, and fosters people-to-people connections.”
2. Vehicles for strengthening the sense of national community among the Chinese people.
A resonance between Eastern and Western cultures:
Western Context: The Silk Road Fortune Ship echoes the societal value of Noah’s Ark’s mission to “save lives.”
Eastern Wisdom: The Silk Road Fortune Ship symbolizes “working together as one ship,” reflecting the unity and solidarity of the Chinese nation in building upon the core values of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
IV. Future Vision: From Artistic Symbol to Cultural Action
5. The China Silk Road Treasure Ship International Culture and Art Research Institute will mobilize resources to expand domestic and international exhibitions.
6. Plans include installing Silk Road Treasure Ship artworks across Chinese provinces and globally, turning cultural diplomacy into tangible action.
Epilogue
The Silk Road Treasure Ship is not just art but a bridge for cultural diplomacy. Wang concluded: "Artists must be creators of their era and catalysts for cultural progress. The ship’s voyage has begun—its destination is a world of mutual understanding, trust, and shared prosperity."
